Chelsea fans have expressed their appreciation for Enzo Maresca’s decision to include Josh Acheampong in the starting XI for the match against Crystal Palace. The game, set to take place on Saturday, December 4 at Selhurst Park, sees Robert Sanchez starting in goal for Chelsea, with Malo Gusto, Acheampong, Levi Colwill, and Marc Cucurella making up the defense.

In midfield, Moises Caicedo, Enzo Fernandez, Pedro Neto, Cole Palmer, and Jadon Sancho are included, while Nicolas Jackson is the lone forward.

Acheampong, an 18-year-old centre-back, made his debut for Chelsea last season and his full debut under Maresca in the UEFA Conference League against Astana on December 12. He recently extended his contract until June 2029 and has made three appearances this season.

His inclusion in the starting lineup has been positively received by fans, particularly due to the recent struggles of defenders Benoit Badiashile, Tosin Adarabioyo, and Axel Disasi.

One fan praised Maresca for the decision, commenting, “Acheampong over Tosin and Disasi might just be the best decision ever,” while another fan expressed admiration for Maresca’s bravery in giving the young player a chance.

Other supporters also noted their excitement for Acheampong’s start, with comments like “Josh gets his start, LETS GO!” and “Finally the manager showing bravery. I’d rather lose to an Acheampong mistake than a Disasi one.”

Despite the optimism surrounding Acheampong, Chelsea’s upcoming match against Crystal Palace is seen as a challenge. Former Liverpool player Mark Lawrenson predicted a 1-1 draw for the game, citing Chelsea’s recent struggles after a strong start to the season.

The Blues are currently in fourth place in the Premier League, 10 points behind leaders Liverpool, while Palace sit 15th with 20 points. Lawrenson warned that “things unravel quickly at Chelsea” if the team does not manage to turn their form around.
