Premier League release statement following ‘craziest’ foul of the season during Brighton vs Arsenal
João Pedro’s penalty ensured Brighton secured a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Arsenal after a controversial incident at the Amex Stadium. The penalty came after William Saliba was adjudged to have accidentally headbutted Pedro inside the box while contesting a high ball.
Referee Anthony Taylor wasted no time in pointing to the spot, a decision quickly checked and upheld by VAR. The Premier League later released a statement confirming the ruling:
“The referee’s call of penalty for a foul by Saliba on João Pedro was checked and confirmed by VAR, who deemed there was sufficient contact for a penalty.”
Ethan Nwaneri had given Arsenal the lead in the first half, but Pedro’s composed penalty in the second half brought the hosts level, proving decisive in the match.
The incident sparked debate among fans on social media, with opinions divided over whether the penalty decision was fair. One fan wrote, *”Just like any other tackle that really. Ball is there to be won, Pedro wins it first and Saliba is late. Correct decision.”*
Another disagreed, tweeting, *”I’m sorry that’s an incredibly soft penalty. Saliba is attempting to head the ball, and there is the lightest graze of Joao Pedro’s head.”*
Others defended the referee’s decision, with one stating, *”Not sure why there’s complaints about that penalty decision. Saliba heads Joao Pedro and completely misses the ball… Blatant penalty.”*
The draw means Arsenal closed the gap on league leaders Liverpool but only by one point. Brighton, meanwhile, climbed into the top half of the table, now sitting in 10th place.
