PGMOL explain Anthony Taylor’s decision to award Brighton with penalty
The Premier League clarified why VAR upheld Anthony Taylor’s decision to award Brighton a penalty against Arsenal. The incident involved William Saliba, who was penalized for head-to-head contact with Joao Pedro.
Saliba, attempting to win an aerial duel in Brighton’s box, mistimed his jump, leading to a collision with Pedro’s head. As Pedro fell, referee Taylor pointed to the penalty spot amidst a crowded area. Despite the rare nature of the incident, VAR officials Paul Tierney and Dan Cook at Stockley Park quickly reviewed and confirmed the decision.
A statement from the Premier League Match Centre explained: “The referee’s call of penalty for a foul by Saliba on João Pedro was checked and confirmed by VAR, who deemed there was sufficient contact for a penalty.”
Ahead of the match, Mikel Arteta addressed the absence of key players as Arsenal aimed to extend their unbeaten streak to 13 games against Brighton. Kai Havertz, Gabriel Martinelli, and Martin Ødegaard were unavailable for selection.
Arteta commented, “They weren’t fully recovered. We have certain issues as well, with Martinelli. It is what it is.” Havertz was sidelined again due to illness, while Ødegaard, who has not trained since the Brentford match, started on the bench. Martinelli was the latest to join the list of absentees.
