Manchester City Eyeing Midfield Reinforcements in Busy January Window
Manchester City continues to make moves in what has already been a busy January transfer window.
Last summer, City’s major acquisition was Savinho, signed from within the City Football Group for a reported £30 million, alongside the return of İlkay Gündoğan. Despite limited spending, the club recorded a profit of approximately £126 million due to significant sales, including Julián Álvarez (£81.5m), João Cancelo (£21m), Liam Delap (£20m), and Taylor Harwood-Bellis (£20m).
With their financial position secure, reports suggest City is closing in on Lens defender Abdukodir Khusanov and Eintracht Frankfurt striker Omar Marmoush. However, Marmoush may not be the only Frankfurt player in their sights.
City’s Focus on Midfield Reinforcements
According to **GiveMeSport**, Manchester City and Arsenal are reportedly in a bidding war to sign Frankfurt’s 20-year-old midfielder Hugo Larsson. Liverpool and Tottenham have also expressed interest in the Swedish international, who is valued at around £70 million.
Larsson joined Frankfurt in May 2023 for a reported €9m (£8m) after rising through the ranks at Malmö, where he won a domestic double and made 61 appearances. He has quickly become a key figure in Dino Toppmöller’s squad, logging 1,515 minutes across all competitions this season, with four goals, including two in the Europa League.
Hugo Larsson’s Impact and Potential
Swedish football pundit Per Lagerström has described Larsson as one of the “hottest” prospects in the Bundesliga. Comparisons have even been drawn between Larsson and Jude Bellingham, with data analyst Ben Mattinson noting similarities in their playing styles.
Larsson vs. Bellingham: A Statistical Comparison
Statistic | Hugo Larsson| jude Bellingham |
|—————————–|——————|———————|
| Appearances | 64 | 82 |
| Minutes Played | 4,059 | 7,035 |
| Goals (per 90) | 0.13 | 0.46 |
| Assists (per 90) | 0.04 | 0.31 |
| Shots (per 90) | 0.78 | 1.94 |
| Goals – xG | +1.3 | +12.1 |
| Passes Attempted (per 90) | 39.53 | 44.74 |
| Pass Completion (%) | 86.9% | 87.4% |
| Tackles (per 90) | 1.44 | 1.51 |
| Interceptions (per 90) | 1.44 | 0.86 |
| Touches (per 90) | 48.05 | 54.68 |
While Bellingham’s attacking numbers outshine Larsson’s—scoring 36 goals since last season compared to Larsson’s six—the Swede excels in defensive metrics. He boasts comparable passing statistics and outperforms Bellingham in interceptions, making him a strong candidate for City’s midfield needs.
Why Larsson Could Be Key for City
Since Rodri’s ACL injury in September, City has struggled to find a suitable replacement for their midfield anchor. Pep Guardiola has described Rodri as “irreplaceable” and lamented the absence of a central midfielder of his caliber.
Neither Mateo Kovačić nor İlkay Gündoğan has successfully filled the void, leaving City in need of a solution. Larsson’s defensive capabilities, composure on the ball, and potential to grow into a more attacking role could make him a transformative signing for the reigning champions.
As City looks to turn their season around, securing Larsson’s services could prove a shrewd move to reignite their campaign.
