Since joining Sunderland from Birmingham City in June 2023, Jobe Bellingham has become a pivotal figure in the team’s surprising push for automatic promotion from the Championship. Transitioning to a central midfield role as a No. 8, he has flourished, contributing four goals and three assists so far this season.

With the January transfer window open, speculation about his future has intensified. Goodman believes Manchester United’s reported interest is well-founded, especially given the club’s midfield needs.

United’s reported interest in signing him during the summer makes perfect sense. He’s a midfielder who can do it all—whether playing deep, in a conventional role, or as an advanced playmaker. He can pass, dribble, tackle, create, and score goals.”

Goodman also highlighted United’s struggles in midfield, suggesting Bellingham’s athleticism and versatility could address a key weakness. However, he acknowledged the significant step up required, noting, “At 19, it would be a big gamble, but one that could pay off as he continues to improve.”

Drawing comparisons to his brother Jude’s successful move from Birmingham City to Borussia Dortmund, Goodman praised the Bellingham family’s grounded nature and strong support system, which he believes will help Jobe manage the demands of a potential high-profile transfer.

Despite the interest, Goodman urged Bellingham to stay at Sunderland until the season’s end, citing the possibility of helping the team secure promotion to the Premier League. “My advice would be to see the season out at Sunderland. If they get promoted, he could be a Premier League player with them. If not, there will still be plenty of opportunities in the summer,” Goodman added.

Bellingham’s contract extension with Sunderland, signed in August, ties him to the club until 2028, meaning any suitors will need to table a substantial offer to secure his services.
