🚩🏟️Liverpool turn down astronomical bid for Darwin Nunez that is more than they initially paid for the striker

Liverpool have rejected a big-money bid for Darwin Nunez, according to a new report, as the Premier League side continue to linked with a move for highly-rated forward Stefanos Tzimas.

Back in the summer of 2022, Liverpool forked out an initial £64 million to land Nunez from Benfica and for many, it was seen as good business given his impressive record for the Portuguese outfit.

But after a 34-goal season in Portugal, the striker struggled to hit the ground running. In fact, Nunez admitted to finding it difficult to adapt to the demands of the Premier League.

“It’s a very big change,” the Uruguayan told Sky Sports. “Here, the league is stronger, more competitive. I didn’t expect it to be so strong.”

He added: “It has impressed me a lot. There are no bad teams. They are all in this league for a reason. The football is more difficult than in Portugal and more competitive. You don’t get much time.”

At times, Nunez has shown glimpses of brilliance in a Liverpool shirt – take last season’s remarkable substitute appearance against Newcastle at St James’ Park, when he came off the bench to net a late brace.

But after scoring just two goals in the Premier League for Arne Slot’s side this season, his time at the club appears to be coming to an end.

It is said Liverpool have turned down a verbal offer in the region of £70 million from Saudi Pro League side Al Hilal for Nunez, according to Sam Maguire from Anfield Watch.

Al Hilal, a club that are managed by former Benfica manager Jorge Jesus, are looking for someone to replace Neymar, who has been strongly linked with a return to Santos.

Liverpool, meanwhile, will strike a deal for Nunez at £75 million, according to the above report. Michael Edwards, the club’s director, is keen to retrieve such a fee after stepping in to handle negotiations.

As reported by Anfield Watch, Liverpool ‘admire’ Napoli frontman Victor Osimhen, who is currently on loan at Turkish Super Lig side Galatasaray.

The report stated: “Liverpool really admire Victor Osimhen and (Michael) Edwards and (Richard) Hughes both view him as the ideal replacement for Nunez.

Liverpool are reportedly looking to offer £62 million to sign the perfect replacement for under-fire striker Darwin Nunez.

Although it has been a flying start to life as Liverpool head coach for Arne Slot, the Reds recently slipped up against the likes of Fulham, Newcastle United and Manchester United.

As things stand, Liverpool hold a six-point lead at the top of the Premier League table and also have a game in hand over their closest rivals.

Despite the encouraging start to the campaign, the talk of the town is currently centred around the futures of some of their first-team players.

For example, Trent Alexander-Arnold, Virgil van Dijk and Mohamed Salah will walk away from Anfield for free in the summer as they enter the final few months of their contracts.

Meanwhile, struggling striker Nunez has also been linked with a move away, with Italian giants AC Milan said to be interested in signing the Uruguayan.

Now, it has been claimed that Liverpool have picked out their perfect replacement for Nunez.

“Liverpool’s interest in Osimhen goes back many years, with Edwards a keen admirer of the Nigerian since his first foray in European football in Belgium and then Lille.”

According to Transfermarkt, Osimhen, who has scored 13 goals in 16 appearances across all competitions, has a market value of €75 million, which roughly equates to £62 million.

In contrast, Nunez has only managed four goals in 24 matches for Liverpool this season, a far cry from the numbers produced by the likes of Salah, Cody Gakpo and Luis Diaz.

Earlier in the season, Slot said of Nunez: “For me, he has impact. He hasn’t scored the amount of goals that he wants to score … but he does have impact in his work-rate. He’s part of a team that scores a lot of goals and is winning a lot.

“Of course, as a number nine you want to score more goals, and that’s definitely what he wants as well. But I’m not only judging Mohamed Salah on his goals and Darwin on his goals – I also judge them on their work-rate and what they bring to the team.”

Liverpool are back in action on Wednesday night when they take on Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-final of the Carabao Cup.
