The Real Madrid captain has once again exposed his numerous defensive shortcomings against Las Palmas. Within seconds, Lucas Vázquez made it easy for the visitors to open the scoring at the Santiago Bernabéu.

Real Madrid has been far from solid defensively this season. With over 37 goals conceded since the start of the campaign—marking the worst defensive ratio in six seasons—the club under Florentino Pérez continues to struggle at the back. On Sunday, during the 20th matchday of La Liga at the Santiago Bernabéu, it took Fábio Silva just 20 seconds to score for Las Palmas. With a defence composed of Fran García, Antonio Rüdiger, Raúl Asensio, and Lucas Vázquez, Carlo Ancelotti’s side was caught out far too early.

On the visitors’ very first attack, Sandro Ramírez delivered a perfect cross into the penalty area. While Rüdiger and Bellingham were too late to clear the danger, Lucas Vázquez, filling in on the right flank in Dani Carvajal’s absence, also failed to clear the ball that landed in his zone. Once again absent defensively, the right-back—who is expected to be replaced by Trent Alexander-Arnold next season—allowed the Portuguese forward from Las Palmas to easily beat Thibaut Courtois.

Once more, Real Madrid must urgently address their defensive issues, or this season could end in disaster. With the January transfer window still open, the Madrid board can still look for solutions to strengthen this underperforming backline. Exploring internal options, such as reserve players Aguado or Jesús Fortea, particularly for the right flank, could be crucial to replacing Lucas, who is currently struggling to deliver.
