Ollie Watkins then took advantage of a mistake by Arsenal’s Thomas Partey, scoring an equalizer to make it 2-2.
In a dramatic late moment, Arsenal thought they had won the game when a shot from Mikel Merino deflected off Havertz and into the net. However, after reviewing the play, VAR ruled out the goal due to a handball by Havertz. Frustration grew when Merino hit the post in the final moments, and Leandro Trossard’s rebound was saved by Villa’s goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez.
Despite a strong push from Arsenal during seven minutes of added time, Villa held on for a valuable point. The result leaves Arsenal six points behind Liverpool in the race for the title, with one more game played than their rivals.
