Postecoglou: ‘Potentially’ no more signings at Spurs this month

 

 

 

Tottenham Hotspur head coach Ange Postecoglou has said that it remains a possibility that there are no further signings at the club this month.

 

 

 

Spurs completed the transfer of 21-year-old goalkeeper Antonin Kinksy from Slavia Prague on January 5 but have not made any more additions to the squad since then.

 

 

 

Postecoglou’s side take on German side Hoffenheim in their seventh league-phase game of the Europa League on Thursday and are set to be without 14 players as they make the trip to

Damsgaard’s new deal confirmed

 

 

 

We now have official confirmation from Brentford — Mikkel Damsgaard has signed a new deal which runs until the summer of 2030.

 

 

 

Damsgaard has played 27 times for Brentford in all competitions this season. Here’s his boss Thomas Frank on the new contract:

 

 

 

“I am very happy that Mikkel has signed a new contract with us. This season, he is starting to show what we believed we’d get from him. We knew that wouldn’t happen straight away because of the time he was out before he came here, but it ended up being longer than expected — both for him and us.

 

 

 

“Mikkel was then unlucky with another injury but, after two years of relatively consistent training and a good environment – and with patience both ways — we are now seeing the fruit of the work. He has been one of our best players this season; we are very dangerous when he is playing.

 

 

 

“But there is more to come from Mikkel. It has been half a season, now he needs to perform for a full season. We need to add layers, but I am happy with what he is doing.”

Done deal: West Brom sign Price

 

 

 

Championship side West Bromwich Albion have announced the signing of Isaac Price for an undisclosed fee from Belgian club Standard Liege.

 

 

 

The 21-year-old, who has scored six goals in 18 games for Northern Ireland, has signed a four-and-a-half-year deal with Albion.

 

 

 

Midfielder Price came through Everton’s academy before signing for Liege in 2023.

 

 

 

Here are his first words as a West Brom player:

 

 

 

“I am over the moon to be here and I’m really excited to get started.

 

 

 

“It’s a great opportunity for me to show the manager what I can do and I think I’m going into it like all the other players are. Everyone will be trying to show him what they can do, even though the other lads have been here longer than me.

 

 

 

“He’ll get his first impression of me from training. I’m looking forward to meeting him and all the players and getting down to work.

 

 

 

Manchester United and Lecce €10m apart on Dorgu

This is an interesting one… Laurie Whitwell and James Horncastle report that Manchester United and Lecce are €10million apart in negotiations over wing-back Patrick Dorgu.

 

 

 

Lecce are said to want €40m for the 20-year-old, while United have indicated a willingness to go to €30m.

 

 

 

It sounds like talks are ongoing on this one, with United’s director of negotiations Matt Hargreaves travelling to Italy a positive sign.

 

 

 

Hargreaves was in Milan on Tuesday for a meeting with Lecce sporting director Pantaleo Corvino.

Manchester United and Lecce €10m apart on Patrick Dorgu

 

 

 

Brighton recall Rushworth from Hull loan

 

 

 

Brighton have announced that they have recalled goalkeeper Carl Rushworth from his loan with Hull City in the Championship.

 

 

 

The 23-year-old returns to Brighton having played just three times for Hull in the first half of the season, all of which came in the last month in place of previous first-choice Ivor Pandur.

 

 

 

The season-long loan deal struck with Hull included a break clause for a limited period at the beginning of the January transfer window.

 

 

 

Brighton have exercised that option and could now loan him elsewhere in the Championship, if they decide that is the most suitable course of action.

 

 

 

The Athletic previously reported that Hull’s head coach Ruben Selles was keen to keep Rushworth, but the financial arrangements of the agreement were prohibitive to the club retaining his services.

“There is something in my mind for this to be the last season, but I always leave the door open.

 

 

 

“Maybe in April or May, I will decide something different. We will see. I am calm. I have seen everything in the world of football and have achieved a lot. From my side, there is not any pressure. I lived my dream.

 

 

 

“Physically, it does not scare me to play a couple more years in this league. The bigger problem is the head. It is not just your professional career, you start your career in the youth academy. When you see all the years you spend, every day training and every weekend you have a tournament or a game, sometimes it is time for another life.”

Done deal: Zaha joins Charlotte FC

 

 

 

 

 

Ex-Crystal Palace and Manchester United man Wilfried Zaha has joined MLS club Charlotte FC on a year-long loan from Galatasaray.

 

 

 

The 32-year-old will play for Charlotte throughout the 2025 season with his contract at the U.S. club running through to January 2026, with an option to extend the agreement until June 2026.

 

 

 

It ends the Ivory Coast international’s loan spell at French side Lyon, whom Zaha joined in August last year.

 

 

 

Zaha made just six appearances in all competitions and started only one game for Lyon.

Sesko, Isak, a loan: Arsenal’s No 9 options

 

 

 

 

 

 

 

After Gabriel Jesus’ injury, we know that Arsenal are open to strengthening at No 9 or out wide this month.

 

 

 

They have an ongoing interest in both Benjamin Sesko and Alexander Isak as potential summer transfers, reports James McNicholas in this week’s DealSheet, but the club may pursue a loan deal for a forward in January.

 

 

 

Sesko has been a long-term target and the indications at this stage are that it would be extremely difficult (and expensive) to do a deal with RB Leipzig this month.

Amorim clarifies ‘worst Manchester United team’ comments

 

 

 

Manchester United head coach Ruben Amorim has clarified his comments over the weekend that his team are “maybe the worst team in the history” of the club.

 

 

 

Speaking ahead of Thursday’s visit of Rangers in the Europa League, the 39-year-old said that he “finds it hard to hide frustrations.”

 

 

 

The Athletic reported on Tuesday that Amorim caused damage to the big screen television in United’s dressing room during a furious critique of his players’ performance following the defeat to Brighton.

 

 

 

Here’s what he had to say:

 

 

 

“I was talking more about myself than my players. I also talked in the same response about I was not helping my players. You talk about the players not being good enough, I never put the spotlight on my players.

 

 

 

“I am frustrated sometimes. I should not say in those terms sometimes. I find it hard to hide frustrations.

 

 

 

“The good thing is I said the same things in the dressing room five minutes before. I am blunt with my players.”

Done deal: Kerolin signs for Man City

 

 

 

 

 

Manchester City have announced the signing of Brazilian international Kerolin from NWSL side North Carolina Courage.

 

 

 

The 25-year-old forward has signed a three-and-a-half-year contract and becomes City’s third signing of the January window after Aemu Oyama and Rebecca Knaak.

 

 

 

Kerolin has 45 national team caps and was named NWSL Most Valuable Player in 2023, the first South American player to do so.

 

 

 

She will wear the No 14 shirt and joins with City currently fourth in the WSL table.

 

 

 

 

 

Keylor Navas joins Newell’s Old Boys

 

 

 

Keylor Navas has joined Argentinean club Newell’s Old Boys.

 

 

 

The 38-year-old, formerly of Real Madrid and Paris Saint-Germain, has not played since leaving the French club at the end of the 2023-24 season.

 

 

 

The goalkeeper is best known for his five-year spell at Madrid between 2014 and 2019, where he made 162 appearances and won 11 senior trophies including three Champions League titles.

 

 

 

In 2019, he joined PSG — where he was first-choice until the arrival of Gianluigi Donnarumma in 2021.

 

 

 

Navas played at all three World Cups between 2014 and 2022 for his nation, for whom he was capped 114 times.

ICYMI: Maloney seals Mainz move

 

 

 

 

 

Here’s a done deal worth reminding our USMNT fans about — midfielder Lennard Maloney has joined Mainz from Bundesliga rivals Heidenheim.

 

 

 

Maloney, 25, has signed a three-and-a-half-year deal at the club through to the summer of 2028.

 

 

 

The defensive midfielder spent two-and-a-half seasons at Heidenheim and was part of the side that won promotion to the top flight of German football at the end of the 2022-23 campaign.

 

 

 

Maloney was given his senior USMNT debut by former head coach Gregg Berhalter in 2020. He has won two caps for the US, with his most recent appearance coming in the CONCACAF Nations League defeat to Trinidad and Tobago in November 2023.
