Arne Slot has already hinted at the prospect of strengthening Liverpool’s squad in the summer, a likelihood that has only increased following the club’s inactivity in the January transfer window.
With the Reds currently in contention for a historic 20th English top-flight title and emerging as strong contenders for the Champions League, reinforcements could be essential. The physical and mental demands of competing on all fronts this season, coupled with the need to maintain a winning mentality within the squad, make summer signings a real possibility.
One name that could reappear on Liverpool’s radar after the conclusion of the 2024/25 campaign is attacking midfielder Xavi Simons, who has been linked with the club in the past.
Liverpool’s Pursuit of Xavi Simons Just Got Tougher
Securing Simons, however, has become a far more challenging task, with RB Leipzig agreeing to a £66.9m deal for the Dutchman.
That said, Fabrizio Romano’s recent update on X (formerly Twitter) suggests that the 21-year-old’s future in Germany is still uncertain, leaving room for potential developments.
Even if Liverpool were to make a move, they would likely have to pay a fee exceeding the £66.9m agreement Leipzig has with PSG.
Do Liverpool Need Simons This Summer?
Heading into the next transfer window, Liverpool will have some clear priorities to address. The fullback positions could be an area of concern, especially depending on Trent Alexander-Arnold’s contract situation, while the centre-forward role may also require attention based on Darwin Núñez’s performances.
Additionally, the search for a long-term replacement for Virgil van Dijk at left-sided centre-back remains unresolved, and right-wing reinforcements might be considered if Mohamed Salah does not extend his contract.
That’s already a significant workload for Richard Hughes and his recruitment team, even before factoring in any opportunistic signings the club might pursue. Simons would likely fall into that latter category—a versatile attacking midfielder with experience playing on both wings.
At just 21, the Dutch international has already showcased his immense talent, delivering another impressive season in the Bundesliga with nine goal contributions in 17 games.
A player to keep an eye on for sure!
