Liverpool-Linked Striker Secures £22M Deadline Day Transfer as Club Confirms Deal”
Liverpool have missed out on a striker who had been linked with a move to Anfield during the January transfer window.
Last month, Sky Germany’s Florian Plettenberg reported that the Reds had begun discussions with Nurnberg regarding a possible deal for Stefanos Tzimas, who was on loan from PAOK Salonika. However, Nurnberg exercised their purchase option for the 19-year-old before he was quickly secured by another Premier League club.
On Monday morning, Brighton officially confirmed the signing of the Greek forward on a five-and-a-half-year contract. Despite the transfer, he will remain on loan at Nurnberg for the remainder of the season.
Fabrizio Romano also shared the news on X, describing the £22m deal as an ‘excellent signing’ for the Seagulls, who emerged as leading contenders for Tzimas in recent days.
Although Liverpool already have strong attacking depth—shown by Jayden Danns’ anticipated loan move to Sunderland—there may be some at Anfield who see Tzimas as a missed opportunity.
The young striker has been impressive this season, netting 10 goals in 17 league matches for Nurnberg. Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler has praised him as an “exceptional young talent” with a “natural ability to score goals.”
Even if Tzimas was not ready to compete for a spot in Arne Slot’s squad immediately, Liverpool could have taken a similar approach to Brighton by signing him and sending him on loan for further development.
With the summer transfer window approaching, Liverpool may now need to explore other attacking options. The urgency of any new signings could depend on potential departures, particularly Mohamed Salah, whose future remains uncertain as he has yet to agree to a new contract and could leave as a free agent in just five months.
