Former Manchester United defender Rio Ferdinand has defended Jadon Sancho following his controversial “freedom” comment on Marcus Rashford’s Instagram post. The remark received mixed reactions from United supporters, with some seeing it as criticism of the club.
Rashford, who had limited playing time under Rúben Amorim before securing a six-month loan to Aston Villa last month, shared photos from his debut against Tottenham Hotspur in the FA Cup on Instagram. Sancho responded with a one-word comment, “Freedom,” sparking speculation among fans that it was a dig at Manchester United’s environment.
Ferdinand, however, supported Sancho’s comment, suggesting that Rashford might rediscover his form away from the pressures of Old Trafford. Speaking on his *Rio Presents* podcast, Ferdinand noted that several former United players have thrived after leaving the club, attributing their success to a reduced pressure environment and a less toxic atmosphere. He cited Antony, McTominay, and Elanga as examples of players who have performed well since moving elsewhere.
He argued that United’s inconsistent playing style, flawed recruitment strategy, and lack of clear direction have led to players underperforming. He pointed out that the club has often signed big names like Romelu Lukaku and Jadon Sancho without a proper plan and has mismanaged Academy talents like Scott McTominay by playing them out of position.
This pattern is not new, as many players have struggled at United only to flourish elsewhere. Ferdinand believes the main issue is the pressure and expectations at Old Trafford, which can hinder performance. When players move to clubs with better structure and less pressure, they are often able to showcase their true abilities.
