However, the focus ahead of the match is on the officiating decision, as Andy Madley has been appointed as the referee despite being at the center of controversy over the weekend.
Madley made headlines during Manchester United’s 2-2 draw against Everton at Goodison Park. Deep into stoppage time, he awarded Everton a penalty after ruling that Harry Maguire had fouled Ashley Young in the box. However, VAR official Matt Donohue intervened, instructing Madley to review the incident on the pitchside monitor. After a lengthy review of multiple angles, the referee overturned his initial call, instead awarding a drop ball to Manchester United.
The decision sparked debate, with replays suggesting that while Maguire may not have committed a foul, Matthijs de Ligt had. Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher later claimed on *Ref Watch* that had Madley seen a particular angle from behind the goal, he likely would have stuck with his original call.
Despite the controversy, both Madley and Donohue remain assigned to midweek Premier League fixtures. While Madley will take charge of Arsenal’s visit to the City Ground, Donohue has been named the lead VAR for Brighton’s clash with Bournemouth and Liverpool’s match against Newcastle.
