BARCELONABarcelona Duo Convinced Spain Captain Álvaro Morata to Continue International Career

In a tournament where young talents like Lamine Yamal, Nico Williams, and Dani Olmo stole the spotlight, Spain’s captain Álvaro Morata played a crucial but often overlooked role in their European Championship triumph last summer. Though primarily a striker, Morata was tasked with a high-intensity pressing role, contributing to Spain’s tactical discipline rather than focusing solely on scoring.
Despite his hard work, Morata netted just once in the tournament, and following Spain’s victory, he contemplated retiring from international duty as he entered the final phase of his career. However, two key Barcelona players convinced him otherwise.
Pedri and Olmo Persuade Morata to Stay
In a recent interview with MARCA (via SPORT), Morata revealed that Barcelona midfielders Pedri and Dani Olmo played a significant role in his decision to continue with the national team.
“When I did that interview [with El Mundo], Pedri and Dani Olmo told me that they would like me to be with them,” Morata shared.
The support from his younger teammates helped reignite his passion for international football. “That encouraged me to continue because, in the end, I would always be in the national team, all my life. But there are times when you suffer. I have already recovered from that stage. Now, I just enjoy the national team,” he added.
A Respected Veteran in the Spanish Camp
Morata has become a respected leader within the Spanish squad, especially among the younger generation, including Yamal, Olmo, and Pedri. His experience and presence in the dressing room have been valuable for a team looking to transition into a new era of Spanish football.
Since the conclusion of Euro 2024, Morata has played in four matches for Spain, even finding the net against Serbia in October. With the UEFA Nations League quarterfinals against the Netherlands approaching in March, he is expected to be on Luis de la Fuente’s squad list once again.
Focusing on Galatasaray
On the club level, Morata made a move to Turkish giants Galatasaray in the winter transfer window. Since joining, he has already scored two goals and is looking to maintain his form both domestically and internationally.
With Spain gearing up for more challenges ahead, Morata’s decision to continue playing could be a major boost as they look to build on their recent success.
