Fans think Mohamed Salah’s late winning penalty for Liverpool against Burnley should have been disallowed, although Premier League rules can clarify any confusion.

Liverpool maintained their 100 per cent start to the defence of their title after a stoppage-time victory at Turf Moor against the Clarets.

The game remained goalless until almost the very end as it looked like the spoils were going to be shared.

Burnley were reduced to 10 men before full-time after Lesley Ugochukwu was shown a second yellow card.

But the key moment came in injury time when Burnley substitute Hannibal handled Jeremie Frimpong’s cross, which led to a Liverpool penalty being awarded by referee Michael Oliver.

Speaking to Sky Sports, Liverpool’s match winner said: “Tough opponent today, we tried our best to get the ball between the lines. It was tough but I am glad we managed it.

“We have a few new players in the starting line up and it takes time to adapt to our game and we try our best to make them confident in our game.

“We don’t give up. We try and push ourselves to the limit and as team we did that.”

Liverpool boss Arne Slot added: “I settled really bad because after 90 minutes when I saw how much added time there was I was shocked.

“I was still shocked when we got the penalty because five minutes of added time for me was unbelievable. Shocked and then happy Mo scored the penalty.”

But some fans believed that Salah’s match winning penalty after being chalked off over player encroachment in the penalty area.

Before the Egypt international strikes the ball, Frimpong is clearly seen to be running into the penalty area, and so some supporters on X believe the goal should not have stood.

One fan wrote: “Wasn’t aware you’re allowed in the box before the penalty’s been taken.”

Another posted: “Whatever Liverpool want I guess.”

And one fan wrote: “It’s Liverpool the league and PGMOL belongs to them. Keep quiet and let them have whatever they want.”

But it appears those who believe the goal should have been chalked off are wrong with their claim, when the Premier League’s rules are consulted.

Though Frimpong is in the box when the penalty is taken, he has no impact on the kick’s outcome.

The Premier League rules state for a goal to be disallowed for encroachment, a player must have a ‘material impact’ on the outcome, which Frimpong does not as Salah scored the penalty outright.

The rules state: “To be penalised for encroachment, the player must have a material impact on the outcome of the kick.

“For example, this could be when a defender who encroaches clearly prevents a goal from being scored or impacts the ability of an opponent to play the ball.

“If the encroaching player has no impact, there is no offence.”
