PGMOL expert: An Arsenal player could be handed a long suspension following an ‘off-the-ball’ clash against Newcastle, which requires investigation.

Mikel Arteta now faces the likelihood of one of his Arsenal stars receiving retrospective action for what occurred during the game against Newcastle United.

This update comes via Keith Hackett, a former PGMOL chief and ex-FIFA referee, who told Football Insider exclusively that a disciplinary panel may step in if Newcastle choose to report the case.

In a heated contest on Sunday, 28 September, Newcastle fell 2-1 to Arsenal after taking the initial lead through Nick Woltemade, before late goals from Mikel Merino and Gabriel Magalhaes sealed victory at St James’ Park.

Woltemade has settled quickly into Newcastle life, netting twice in three league games since arriving from VfB Stuttgart, though his strike in the 34th minute wasn’t enough to overcome the Gunners.

Gabriel Magalhaes should have been dismissed during the clash with Newcastle.

Moments after the German forward’s opener, following a coming together with Arsenal’s Gabriel inside the box, the pair were at it again when Arteta’s men restarted play.

Gabriel hit Woltemade in the face, retaliating after their earlier encounter, but the defender avoided punishment as referee Jarred Gillett failed to spot it.

Ironically, the Brazilian centre-back went on to score the winning goal, silencing the home crowd and keeping Arsenal just two points behind Liverpool at the summit of the Premier League table.

Supporters are furious with the call and with VAR’s failure to intervene, which almost certainly would have resulted in a red card and at least a three-game ban.

Newcastle could still report the Arsenal man to football authorities.

Fans remain angered by the officials’ decision and VAR’s silence, which would likely have led to Gabriel’s dismissal and minimum three-match suspension.

Newcastle United are considering escalating the matter to football authorities.

Having already insisted Gabriel should have been sent off at St James’ Park, Hackett suggested that the player could face retrospective punishment if Newcastle pursue the complaint.

“Absolutely. I believe the procedures are in place for that. A club can report the incident, and then the football association will inquire with the referee and his two assistants about it,” he told Football Insider exclusively.

“If they have seen it, that stops the disciplinary process immediately. They don’t want to re-referee games. If they haven’t, then they will ask both clubs for statements.

“In that event, the player must be charged. If it’s a violent action not spotted by the officials but clearly caught on video, it has to be investigated.

“Did anyone catch it? Did VAR catch it? If yes, the matter is closed. If no, and it’s an off-the-ball act, it gets referred to a disciplinary panel for review.”
