Referee Clement Turpin initially made the wrong decision about Ibrahima Konate’s penalty claim against Galatasaray.

That is according to former Premier League referee and PGMOL director Jon Moss, who exclusively told Football Insider that the officials eventually came to a correct verdict following a VAR review.

Liverpool were beaten 1-0 by Galatasaray in the Champions League on Tuesday (30 September) evening, with Victor Osimhen grabbing the winner in the first half from the penalty spot.

Arne Slot was criticised for his decision to start Dominik Szoboszlai at right back, and it was the Hungarian international who gave away the spot-kick, catching Baris Alper Yilmaz in the face with a flailing arm.

Ibrahima Konate penalty overturned in dying seconds

Liverpool had a penalty of their own awarded in the dying seconds of the contest, as Konate went down under the challenge of Wilfried Singo.

The ball was bouncing in the Galatasaray box, with both Singo and the Reds centre back swinging a foot at it, before referee Turpin pointed to the spot.

However, after a VAR review, the decision was overturned, with it being determined that Konatehad actually committed the foul himself.
