LIVERPOOL
Massive relief for Liverpool! A big Mo Salah development emerges right before his AFCON absence.
Liverpool are set to lose Mohamed Salah to AFCON duty soon, but the club will now be able to keep him longer than initially expected.
Egypt boss Hossam Hassan had hoped to gather his players this week ahead of the tournament in Morocco, where the Pharaohs face Zimbabwe just three days before Christmas.
Salah had planned to speak with his national coach about staying with Liverpool until after the upcoming clash with Brighton, and it now appears he’ll be available for that fixture. According to Mail Sport, FIFA has extended the release period for AFCON players by seven days, meaning clubs only need to release players by 15 December, instead of next Monday.
This adjustment allows Liverpool to keep Salah for four more games, including the Champions League trip to Inter Milan and the crucial Premier League meeting with Fabian Hurzeler’s Brighton.
Liverpool’s 2-0 win over West Ham on Sunday acted as a preview of life without their No. 11, as the winger stayed on the bench throughout the game. Arne Slot’s men handled the challenge well, delivering a composed and deserved victory without him.
Still, despite the criticism he’s faced this season, Salah remains Liverpool’s joint-second top scorer with five goals, and his experience and elite quality will be sorely missed—especially in tough away fixtures against Tottenham and Arsenal during AFCON.
For now, Liverpool can rely on him for the San Siro showdown next week and the tough battle with Brighton on December 13. Even if he doesn’t start, having him available will be a major boost, particularly if injuries arise among t
he forwards.
