Kalvin Phillips has been informed that he is perceived as “too nice” following his farewell gesture at Manchester City. Despite his limited playing time at the Etihad Stadium, the English midfielder is set to embark on a loan spell to West Ham, with the option for the Hammers to make the move permanent. Phillips arrived at City in a high-profile £45 million transfer from Leeds in the summer of 2022 and played a role in the club’s historic treble-winning campaign last season.

Despite starting just two Premier League matches and making only one appearance this season due to Rodri’s outstanding performance in the same position, Pep Guardiola, who had previously described him as “overweight,” has consistently commended Kalvin Phillips for his professionalism and attitude off the field.

As Kalvin Phillips departs from Manchester City, he leaves behind a legacy of popularity within the squad, demonstrating his class even in his farewell from the club.

Jack Gaughan from the Daily Mail reported that during City’s return flight from a warm weather training camp in Abu Dhabi, the 28-year-old took the time to personally thank each individual on the plane.

He engaged in conversations with around 100 employees across various departments, bidding farewell and making sure everyone felt appreciated. Yet, Gaughan questions whether Phillips’ amiable nature might have ultimately been a drawback. Despite interest from several clubs like Newcastle, Juventus, and Atletico Madrid, West Ham emerged as the destination, catching Michail Antonio off guard when the news broke live on Sky Sports on Wednesday night.

Guardiola recently expressed remorse over Phillips’ lack of game time, admitting feeling sorry for his decision regarding the player. In a press conference, Guardiola stated, “I feel so sorry for my decision for him. He doesn’t deserve what has happened to him and I’m so sorry.” He emphasized Phillips’ positive character, acknowledging him as a perfect example of the qualities he seeks in players. However, Guardiola confessed to struggling to envision Phillips fitting into his tactical plans, leading to the lack of opportunities. Despite his regret, Guardiola recognized the necessity of making professional decisions in football.
