Liverpool overcame a major challenge to their Premier League title ambitions, moving back to the top of the table with a 2-1 victory over Chelsea at Anfield on Sunday.

Mohamed Salah’s penalty and Curtis Jones’ decisive goal secured Liverpool’s tenth win in 11 games since Arne Slot took over as manager. Nicolas Jackson temporarily equalized for Chelsea in the second half, but they suffered their first league defeat since falling to Manchester City on the opening weekend.

This win places Liverpool one point ahead of Manchester City and four points clear of Arsenal, who they will face at the Emirates next week. Chelsea, now seven points off the top in sixth place, can still take encouragement from a performance that pushed Liverpool to the limit.

Liverpool’s only loss under Slot occurred against Nottingham Forest following the September international break.

Slot responded by resting his South American internationals—Alexis Mac Allister, Luis Diaz, and Darwin Nunez—after their taxing travels across the Atlantic. Slot’s decision to give Curtis Jones just his second league start of the season proved to be a masterstroke, as the England international won Liverpool’s penalty and netted the match-winning goal.

Chelsea were fortunate not to go down to ten men just six minutes in when Tosin Adarabioyo brought down Diogo Jota. Though Jota was still far from goal, the incident closely resembled the one that saw Arsenal defender William Saliba sent off in a 2-0 defeat at Bournemouth the day before.

Having survived that scare, Chelsea found their rhythm and dominated possession, pushing Liverpool back. But the Reds’ counter-attacking pace remained a constant threat. Salah connected with Jones, who was then fouled by Levi Colwill.

Salah confidently converted the penalty, his 10th goal against his former club.

Soon after, Cody Gakpo found the net following a quick Liverpool break, but Salah had been flagged offside before providing the assist.

Chelsea, however, showed signs of life when Jackson hit the crossbar and post in the first real indication of their attacking intent.

Chelsea got another reprieve just before half-time when referee John Brooks initially awarded another penalty after Jones was challenged by Robert Sanchez. VAR overturned the decision as Sanchez made contact with the ball before tangling with Jones.

Three minutes into the second half, Chelsea equalized with VAR’s assistance. Jackson latched onto a Moises Caicedo through ball and calmly slotted it past Caoimhin Kelleher for his fifth goal in eight Premier League appearances.

The Senegalese forward was initially ruled offside, but replays showed Ibrahima Konate had played him onside.

Liverpool regained their lead just three minutes later when Jones timed his run perfectly to control and flick in a cross from Salah.

Chelsea pressed for an equalizer throughout the final 40 minutes but struggled to carve out clear opportunities. In seven minutes of added time, Renato Vega headed over from Cole Palmer’s free-kick, and Christopher Nkunku narrowly missed connecting with Pedro Neto’s cross.
