BREAKING: William Saliba has officially been cleared to play against Liverpool after a decision made this morning following intervention from the FA

Jamie Carragher used social media to voice his concerns about whether Howard Webb had any role in the decision-making process regarding William Saliba’s red card during Arsenal’s game against Bournemouth.

Saliba, the French defender, was first issued a yellow card by referee Rob Jones in the first half for a foul on Evanilson.

However, following a VAR review, the decision was upgraded, and the yellow card became a red.

This red card means Saliba will now miss an important match against Liverpool next weekend.

Carragher questioned Webb’s involvement, especially since the PGMOL chief was spotted on his phone in the stands during the match.

In a now-deleted post on X, Carragher asked, “Was Howard Webb involved in the decision-making for Saliba’s red card?”

The incident led to a strong reaction from Arsenal fans, who directed their frustration toward Webb and the PGMOL, chanting “F*** Howard Webb” after Saliba’s dismissal.

At the time, the match was still goalless at halftime.

Saliba’s suspension adds to the challenges facing Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta, who is already without captain Martin Ødegaard, who is recovering from an injury.

Though there are signs Ødegaard might return for the Liverpool game, his absence remains a setback.

Additionally, Arsenal is without Bukayo Saka, who is injured following international duty.

In response to the incident, the Premier League issued a statement clarifying the decision to upgrade Saliba’s yellow card to a red.

The statement noted that Saliba’s foul was categorized as denying an obvious goal-scoring chance. “The referee gave Saliba a yellow card for a challenge on Evanilson,” the statement said.

“The VAR determined Saliba denied an obvious goal-scoring opportunity and recommended an on-field review, leading the referee to upgrade the card.”

Declan Rice and Leandro Trossard both received second yellow cards for delaying play, with Trossard’s red coming in a crucial title game against Manchester City last month.
