The Reds will be missing key players such as Federico Chiesa and Diogo Jota due to injuries, while Alexis Mac Allister is suspended for the trip to Spain. However, there’s a boost as Alisson Becker has made the squad after recovering from a muscle injury that sidelined him for two months.

Slot Confirms Alisson’s Return

Speaking at Monday’s pre-match press conference, Slot confirmed that the Brazilian goalkeeper is fit to start. When asked if Alisson could feature against Girona, the Liverpool boss simply said: “Yes, he is.”

Slot added: “Having Alisson back is fantastic. He’s been outstanding for this club and the Brazil national team for so many years. It’s definitely great to have him available again. But let’s not forget how well Caoimh [Kelleher] has performed in his absence.

“We expect the same high standards from Alisson, maybe even better in some aspects. But Kelleher has proven he’s a top-quality goalkeeper as well, giving us the confidence that whoever starts will do the job.”

A Welcome Selection Dilemma

Slot has previously indicated that Alisson would return to the starting XI once fully fit, hinting at a potential line-up change against Girona. While this isn’t a knock on Kelleher, who has delivered excellent performances during Alisson’s absence, the Brazilian’s experience and quality make him a likely starter.

Even with a rare mistake against Newcastle last week, Kelleher has shown he can be trusted in big moments. Slot now faces the enviable task of choosing between two exceptional goalkeepers – a luxury most managers can only dream of.

As the fixture list intensifies and Liverpool deals with other injury setbacks, Alisson’s return comes at a crucial time. Whether Slot opts for his No. 1 or sticks with Kelleher, Liverpool fans can feel confident that the team is in safe hands.
