LIVERPOOL
Rafa Benitez has hinted that he possesses insider knowledge regarding Jurgen Klopp’s departure from Liverpool that fans are not privy to.
Former Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez has indicated that he possesses undisclosed information regarding Jurgen Klopp’s departure from Anfield. Klopp’s announcement last Friday marked the end of his iconic eight-and-a-half-year tenure at the club, during which he secured every English domestic trophy available to Liverpool, along with the Champions League and UEFA Super Cup. Despite his impending departure, Klopp still has the opportunity to clinch up to four more trophies for Liverpool, with the team currently leading the Premier League and remaining in contention in the Europa League, Carabao Cup, and FA Cup.
In an interview with Liverpool’s official website, Klopp disclosed the motive behind his decision to depart from the club: “It’s because I’m, how can I put it, running out of energy. I’ve been aware of it for some time now that I would have to announce it at some point, but I feel completely at ease now. I understand that I can’t keep doing the job repeatedly without a break.”
During discussions about potential signings and upcoming events like the next summer camp, Klopp found himself contemplating his future, expressing uncertainty about his presence for those occasions, which surprised even himself.
Klopp is Liverpool’s sixth permanent manager of this century, following Gerard Houllier, Benitez, Roy Hodgson, Kenny Dalglish, and Brendan Rodgers. Benitez notably led the team to their last Champions League triumph in 2005 before Klopp’s success in 2019. After leaving Liverpool in the summer of 2010, Benitez, now managing Celta Vigo, still maintains some connections at Anfield.
And he has revealed that he knows ‘something else’ about Klopp’s exit.
When asked about the news ahead of his side’s upcoming La Liga clash against Girona, Benitez responded (quotes via Daily Mirror): “I have an advantage, which is that I have people in Liverpool and also people at the club so, more or less, I know how it has happened.
I have nothing but positive things to say about Klopp because he’s my friend, and we have a good relationship. He’s done an incredible job, and everything I can say about him and Liverpool is positive. I’m aware of something else from within the club that holds significant weight. Klopp’s decision to announce his departure allows the club time to reorganize, which, from another perspective, is also very German, as they tend to notify in advance to avoid shocks. I hope Liverpool continues to do well both now and when another coach takes over. I wish the best for the club.”
