Roy Keane harshly criticized Trent Alexander-Arnold while analyzing his performance in a midfield role against Denmark.

For the second consecutive game, Alexander-Arnold partnered Declan Rice in midfield during the 1-1 draw in Frankfurt.

The Liverpool defender has been adapting to this position for England for a significant amount of time but still faced difficulties in various aspects of his game against Denmark.

He was substituted for Conor Gallagher shortly after the second half began, prompting many to suggest Gareth Southgate should abandon the experiment before England’s match against Slovenia.

Former Manchester United captain Keane shared his thoughts on Alexander-Arnold’s midfield displays and, as expected, delivered a forthright critique.

“When you’re substituted in both games, it’s not a good sign,” he said on ITV.

“I always thought it was a massive risk playing him; he’s not used to playing there for his club.

“People say he drifts into that position for Liverpool, but drifting into a role and starting there are entirely different.

“I’ve played in midfield, and it’s a challenging position physically, getting your distances right.

“He’s fallen short in both games. It’s not entirely his fault. You’d have to point to Gareth [Southgate] for this—it’s a big risk to move a full-back into central midfield.

“These aren’t matches against France or Spain; these are games against teams you’d expect England to handle comfortably. It’s a big challenge for him, and he hasn’t measured up.”

Keane’s remarks come as England’s other midfield choices include emerging talents like Kobbie Mainoo and Adam Wharton. However, Southgate caused a stir post-match by mentioning the absence of Kalvin Phillips, who has struggled since joining Manchester City.

“It’s an experiment, and we’re aware that we lack a natural replacement for Kalvin Phillips,” Southgate told the BBC.

“We’re trying different approaches, but at the moment, we’re not performing as smoothly as we’d like.”
