Barcelona to ‘exile’ star player if he refuses new contract or transfer as things turn ugly
Barcelona faces a crucial January transfer window as the club grapples with financial difficulties while remaining in contention for the La Liga title. Despite the challenges, there has been positive news for the Catalan side, as they received approval to register Dani Olmo, preventing him from leaving on a free transfer this month.
However, Barcelona’s financial struggles may force them to sell key players. According to reports, defender Ronald Araújo has drawn interest from Juventus, while Frenkie de Jong is also a potential departure due to his unresolved contract situation.
De Jong’s current deal expires in 2026, but negotiations for an extension have reportedly stalled. Despite the Dutch midfielder’s desire to see out his contract, Barcelona’s financial desperation might lead to drastic measures, including a possible sale. Reports suggest that if De Jong neither extends his contract nor agrees to a transfer, he could face exile from the squad under manager Hansi Flick.
De Jong’s high wages, reportedly €365,385 per week, are a significant burden for the club. This has prompted Barcelona to prioritize other midfielders such as Pedri, Gavi, Marc Casadó, Dani Olmo, and Fermin López, all of whom are reportedly ahead of De Jong in the pecking order.
This season, De Jong has struggled for game time, starting just one of his eight La Liga appearances but managing to score in his limited minutes. While his future at the club remains uncertain, Barcelona’s financial situation suggests they are open to a late exit for the 27-year-old if the right offer comes in.
