The Real Madrid captain has once again exposed his numerous defensive shortcomings against Las Palmas. Within seconds, Lucas VĂĄzquez made it easy for the visitors to open the scoring at the Santiago BernabĂŠu.
Real Madrid has been far from solid defensively this season. With over 37 goals conceded since the start of the campaignâmarking the worst defensive ratio in six seasonsâthe club under Florentino PĂŠrez continues to struggle at the back. On Sunday, during the 20th matchday of La Liga at the Santiago BernabĂŠu, it took FĂĄbio Silva just 20 seconds to score for Las Palmas. With a defence composed of Fran GarcĂa, Antonio RĂźdiger, RaĂşl Asensio, and Lucas VĂĄzquez, Carlo Ancelottiâs side was caught out far too early.

On the visitorsâ very first attack, Sandro RamĂrez delivered a perfect cross into the penalty area. While RĂźdiger and Bellingham were too late to clear the danger, Lucas VĂĄzquez, filling in on the right flank in Dani Carvajalâs absence, also failed to clear the ball that landed in his zone. Once again absent defensively, the right-backâwho is expected to be replaced by Trent Alexander-Arnold next seasonâallowed the Portuguese forward from Las Palmas to easily beat Thibaut Courtois.
Once more, Real Madrid must urgently address their defensive issues, or this season could end in disaster. With the January transfer window still open, the Madrid board can still look for solutions to strengthen this underperforming backline. Exploring internal options, such as reserve players Aguado or JesĂşs Fortea, particularly for the right flank, could be crucial to replacing Lucas, who is currently struggling to deliver.
