I cried on drive to Chelsea as I didn’t want to go– Arsenal came in for me first
Shaun Wright-Phillips never wanted to leave Manchester City, but circumstances forced him to move to Chelsea in 2005. The transfer was an emotional experience for him, and he even cried on his way to London. Having grown up at City, he had a deep love for the club, the fans, and the city itself.
The son of Arsenal legend Ian Wright, Shaun began his career at Nottingham Forest’s academy before joining Manchester City. At City, he became a standout player and earned a spot on the England national team. Despite his happiness at the club and desire to stay, City needed funds and had to sell him. Although Arsenal showed initial interest, they wanted to wait until January, while Chelsea came forward with a £21 million offer, which City accepted. Shaun later discovered that the sale was necessary to keep the club financially afloat.
While Shaun was reluctant to leave, he made the move to Chelsea, where his career started slowly. However, he won the Premier League in his first season and added an FA Cup title in his second. After playing 125 games for Chelsea, he returned to Manchester City in 2008. Around the same time, Arsenal opted to sign Theo Walcott from Southampton instead of waiting for Shaun. Walcott went on to have a successful career at Arsenal.
Shaun remained deeply connected to Manchester City, where he spent much of his career and always wanted to stay. His football legacy continues through his son, D’Margio Wright-Phillips, who plays as a winger for Belgian club Beerschot after starting at Stoke City.
Although Shaun’s football journey took unexpected turns, he achieved notable success and left a lasting mark on the game.
