Chelsea Target New Goalkeeper as Robert Sanchez Faces Uncertain Future

Chelsea are reconsidering their goalkeeping options following multiple costly mistakes from their current number one, Robert Sanchez. Although manager Enzo Maresca has publicly expressed his confidence in the Spaniard, the club is keeping a close watch on Borussia Dortmund’s Gregor Kobel as a potential successor.
Kobel, a 27-year-old Swiss international, has emerged as a player of interest for Chelsea due to his attributes that align with the club’s requirements for a goalkeeper. However, Dortmund remain unwilling to entertain offers at this stage, particularly with their Champions League campaign still in progress. Their recent 3-1 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk secured them a place in the play-off round, where they will face either Sporting CP or Club Brugge for the opportunity to advance further.
Despite Dortmund’s current stance, circumstances may shift in the summer, potentially attracting competition from Manchester United. The Red Devils have been monitoring Kobel for some time, as they have concerns over Andre Onana’s inconsistent displays. However, given that Onana has shown signs of progress and United have other pressing needs in their squad, Chelsea are positioned as the frontrunners should Dortmund decide to negotiate.
Chelsea have already finalized the signing of Belgian goalkeeper Mike Penders from Genk, with the player set to join the squad in the summer. Additionally, Filip Jorgensen has been pushing for a more prominent role, but Maresca has continued to show faith in Sanchez.
Speaking after Chelsea’s loss to Manchester City, Maresca reaffirmed his trust in Sanchez while acknowledging the need for improvement, stating, “We trust Robert for sure, but he is fully aware he is making mistakes. We will continue to support him, but we have a full week before our next game, and we will assess his reaction before deciding.”
The upcoming weeks will be critical in determining whether Sanchez retains his position as Chelsea’s first-choice goalkeeper or if the club accelerates plans to bring in a new number one as they continue to evaluate their options.
