Marcus Rashford Open to Unexpected Role at Aston Villa After Loan Move
Marcus Rashford is reportedly prepared to take on an unfamiliar position at Aston Villa, just days after completing a surprise loan switch from Manchester United.
Villa pulled off one of the biggest deals of the January window by signing Rashford on loan until the end of the season. Despite interest from top European clubs, the England star chose to stay in the Premier League, joining national teammates Ollie Watkins, Ezri Konsa, and Morgan Rogers.
Looking to revive his career after falling out of favor under United manager Ruben Amorim, Rashford seems willing to adapt to a different role if necessary.
A New Challenge as a Striker?
Initially, Rashford is expected to feature in his favored position on the left wing, forming a dangerous front three with Watkins and Rogers. However, The Guardian’s Manchester correspondent Jamie Jackson suggests he might be utilized as a central striker—something he has previously been hesitant to do.
Posting on X (formerly Twitter), Jackson stated: “Don’t be surprised if Rashford plays No. 9 for Villa – and flourishes: am told he’s more than happy to play there.”
This potential shift could be influenced by Villa’s recent transfer activity, particularly Jhon Durán’s move to Al Nassr in the Saudi Pro League. Notably, Rashford has also been assigned Villa’s No. 9 shirt, further fueling speculation that he could be leading the attack.
Rashford’s Previous Stance on the No. 9 Role
A switch to center-forward would be unexpected, given Rashford’s past remarks about preferring a more dynamic role. In a 2019 interview with Sky Sports, he said:
“I’ve never wanted to be just a center-forward. I want to be able to adapt, play different positions, different systems – I don’t want to be just a No. 9.”
How Will Villa Utilize Rashford?
With Watkins excelling as Villa’s main striker in recent years, it remains to be seen whether Rashford will be a permanent center-forward or if he and Watkins will rotate between the left wing and striker role, offering Villa more attacking options.
Regardless of his position, Rashford’s arrival strengthens Unai Emery’s squad as Villa push for a strong finish to the season. Fans will be eager to see how he adapts to his new environment—and whether he can thrive in a role he once resisted.
