Referee Explains the Reason Behind Arne Slot’s Red Card: A ‘Strange’ Handshake?…
Liverpool boss Arne Slot received a red card in an unusual turn of events following the 2-2 stalemate against Everton in the Merseyside derby. The call left supporters in disbelief, with many wondering what exactly transpired during his post-match exchange with referee Michael Oliver.
After an intense contest that saw Curtis Jones and Abdoulaye Doucoure dismissed after a late altercation, emotions remained high. Still, no one anticipated Slot being sent off after the game—especially over what seemed like a routine handshake.
Addressing the press, referee Michael Oliver explained his reasoning: “A handshake is meant to be a gesture of respect, but in this case, it was done in a manner that I deemed inappropriate and provocative. I had no choice but to act accordingly.”
Footage of the moment captured Slot appearing visibly baffled as Oliver reached into his pocket and immediately produced the red card following their handshake. The Dutchman was seen questioning, “You’re sending me off for that?!” before being directed down the tunnel.
Liverpool skipper Virgil van Dijk also voiced his frustration over the officiating throughout the encounter: “I don’t think he managed the game well. Doucoure was provoking our fans, Curtis reacted, and suddenly everything escalated. But a red card for a handshake? That’s difficult to understand.”
The incident quickly ignited discussion across social media, with fans debating the nature and intent of Slot’s handshake. Was it overly firm? Too sarcastic? Did Oliver take offense to something Slot said in the moment?
