The Premier League has clarified why Liverpool’s Diogo Jota was not shown a yellow card for diving after a penalty call was overturned by VAR in the second half at Anfield.
With Liverpool ahead 2-0 against Wolverhampton Wanderers, Jota fell after a challenge from Emmanuel Agbadou, raising concerns among Wolves supporters. Referee Simon Hooper initially pointed to the spot, but VAR official John Brooks recommended he review the decision on the pitchside monitor.
Video footage showed that while Agbadou lunged, the contact was not strong enough to justify a foul, prompting Hooper to overturn his initial call. However, rather than awarding a free kick to Wolves and cautioning Jota for simulation, Hooper restarted play with a drop ball, surprising some Wolves players.
In a statement on X, the Premier League’s Match Centre explained: “VAR checked the referee’s decision to award a penalty to Liverpool for Agbadou’s challenge on Jota and determined that any contact was not caused by Agbadou. Therefore, an on-field review was recommended. The referee overturned his original decision, and play resumed with a drop ball.”
This implies that while the contact did not warrant a penalty, it was deemed sufficient to justify Jota’s fall.
The moment proved crucial as Wolves soon responded, with Matheus Cunha curling in a shot to narrow the deficit after goals from Luis Diaz and Mohamed Salah. A loss at Anfield would leave Wolves only two points clear of the relegation zone.
