Manchester United have only managed to secure one major signing so far this summer, while their rivals Chelsea have already completed four important deals to reinforce their attacking lineup.

However, reports suggest that the two clubs could soon engage in negotiations for a potential deal involving French forward Christopher Nkunku.

United had initially expressed strong interest in signing Nkunku during the January transfer window.

At that time, Chelsea were unwilling to let him go for anything less than £70 million. But the situation has drastically changed.

According to The Mirror, the Stamford Bridge club has now slashed their valuation of the player in half, and they are reportedly open to selling him for just £35 million.

Nkunku, who struggled for game time last season under new Chelsea boss Enzo Maresca, only started nine Premier League matches.

He spent a significant portion of the season on the bench, largely due to injuries and tactical decisions.

With Chelsea having already brought in promising talents like Estevao and Jamie Bynoe-Gittens to strengthen their attacking options, Nkunku’s future at the club appears uncertain.

As a result, they are willing to offload him at a significantly reduced price.

The 27-year-old France international remains a highly skilled and versatile player. Before his move to England, he made headlines in the Bundesliga, particularly during his time at RB Leipzig where he won the Golden Boot and was among the league’s top performers.

His ability to operate in multiple roles — including as a central attacking midfielder, winger, second striker, or even a false nine — makes him an ideal fit for a club like Manchester United that is seeking more dynamism and creativity in attack.

From a financial standpoint, a £35 million transfer for a player of Nkunku’s calibre and experience is considered a bargain, especially given his age and previous output in top-flight European football.

For United, who struggled with attacking creativity and chance creation last season, a player like Nkunku could help solve some of those issues.

Their attacking players — including Antony, Sancho, and Rashford — all faced inconsistent spells, and the addition of someone with Nkunku’s attacking intelligence and movement could bring a much-needed spark.

However, there are valid concerns too. Nkunku endured a difficult 2023–24 season, plagued by injuries — particularly with his knee and hamstring.

Even when he returned, he failed to regain his sharpness or replicate his previous form.

There’s a risk he could become another underwhelming signing like Donny van de Beek, if fitness issues persist.

Nonetheless, if he stays fit and adapts well, Nkunku could be a game-changer for Erik ten Hag’s side.
