Premier League Release Statement Explaining Why Liverpool Goal vs Man City Was Disallowed
Neither Arne Slot’s defending champions, Liverpool, nor Pep Guardiola-managed Manchester City have enjoyed the best of starts to the 2025/26 Premier League campaign – but their meeting at the Etihad Stadium provided plenty of talking points. That includes exactly why Virgil van Dijk’s header in the 39th minute was disallowed for offside.
In what would normally be a top-of-the-table clash between two of England’s biggest heavyweights, it was Erling Haaland, widely regarded as one of the best strikers in world football, who inevitably opened the scoring just shy of the half-hour mark before Van Dijk thought he had levelled proceedings with a brilliant headed goal.
Liverpool’s Dutch defender rose the highest of any player in the City box and bypassed Gianluigi Donnarumma, who made no attempt to thwart the Liverpool captain’s headed effort. As shown in the footage below, Van Dijk and his teammates wheeled off in celebration as they were of the belief they had equalised with just five minutes of the first half left to play.

Replays showed the Scottish defender ducking out of the way of Van Dijk’s goalbound header – but he was adjudged to be in the eyeline of Donnarumma and so the initial decision to rule the goal out stood. Providing their reasoning why, the Premier League Match Centre wrote:
“The referee’s call of offside and no goal to Liverpool was checked and confirmed by VAR – with Robertson in an offside position and deemed to be making an obvious action directly in front of the goalkeeper.”
