Manchester United are reportedly hopeful that Benjamin Sesko has avoided a serious injury, despite him having to pull out of international duty. Sesko sparked concerns at United after being forced off in the 2-2 draw against Tottenham on Saturday afternoon.
United were left with 10 men after Sesko hobbled off less than 30 minutes after he was introduced as a substitute. There had been suggestions that the club could be forced to move for a striker in the January transfer window if Sesko was sidelined for a prolonged period.
Speaking after the match, Ruben Amorim said the Slovenian had picked up a knee injury and was due to undergo further testing. The 22-year-old had been due to link up with the Slovenia squad for their World Cup qualifiers against Kosovo and Sweden.
However, the injury has spoiled the chances of him featuring for his country – much to the annoyance of manager Matjaz Kek. His withdrawal had some United supporters fearing the worst, but there are now hints that the injury may not be as bad as first feared.
ESPN reports that United are ‘confident’ that Sesko won’t be sidelined for a significant period. But they will await the results of further tests for a more detailed diagnosis ahead of their next match against Everton on November 24.
Sesko has contributed two goals and one assist in 12 appearances for United so far this season following his £74million transfer from RB Leipzig in the summer. Amorim has used him off the bench as an impact substitute, as well as from the start of matches.
While the feeling at Carrington is a positive one, there was a very different reaction from Slovenia boss Kek, who was desperate for Sesko’s services in the World Cup qualifiers against Kosovo on Saturday and Sweden on November 18.

“With all due respect to a great club like Manchester United, we have officially not received anything yet; no papers, no documents,” said Kek on Monday. “We would certainly like to get them. We want our medical team to also take a look at it. Our doctor is an expert in this field. We don’t have just anyone in this position.
“I cannot comment, of course I have certain information, and I am also in contact with Beni, of course. I can’t say anything because officially we don’t know anything at all. United haven’t contacted anyone from our camp. Of course, I am concerned about the player; the only thing that matters to me is his wellbeing.
“We are prepared to do everything for that, and we have never sent anyone onto the field if there was the slightest risk. However, the national team is something very special, and I expect maximum respect from everyone.
“Slovenia deserves that, even if on the other side there is a powerhouse like England, and something as extraordinary as the Premier League. After all, it has been quite some time since England defeated Slovenia, and that in itself says something about us.”
