Manchester United Owners Approve Emergency Midfield Package: Amorim, Baleba & Gallagher Set to Arrive in January

The midfield has become a major headache for Manchester United since the start of the 2025/26 season. The “Red Devils” are planning to plug the gap as early as the January transfer window, rather than waiting until summer 2026.

Who is United targeting in midfield?

United faces fierce competition from Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester City to sign a world-class midfielder this summer. United prioritised adding a “number 6” (defensive midfield) but all three rivals have deeper pockets in the transfer market.

They had done research on Carlos Baleba (Brighton) and Conor Gallagher (Atletico Madrid) late in the summer window. However, they couldn’t complete the deals after spending £230 million on forwards Bryan Mbeumo, Matheus Cunha and Benjamin Sesko, plus goalkeeper Senne Lammens.

Young talent under watch

Elliot Anderson (Nottingham Forest) and Adam Wharton (Crystal Palace) will be pursued at the end of the season, while United’s scouts are also monitoring Wolves’ midfielder Joao Gomes.

United want to reduce the wage bill – one reason they’re hesitant to renew Casemiro’s contract at £375,000 per week. But this could put Old Trafford at a disadvantage compared with the likes of Man City, Liverpool and Chelsea.

⚡ Signing before the World Cup

United want to sign a new midfielder before the World Cup to avoid a transfer-fee surge if players shine at the tournament. Cheaper, younger options are also being considered.

It’s not excluded that United will make a move in the January window. According to reports, the INEOS group is working with Atletico Madrid to enquire about a loan of Conor Gallagher, with an option to buy outright for £45 million at season’s end — should Gallagher perform well. The 25-year-old midfielder wants more game time ahead of the World Cup, but he hasn’t been given enough opportunities by coach Diego Simeone.

Opportunity for Kobbie Mainoo to move

A deal in the January window could open the door for Kobbie Mainoo to find a suitable destination. The young England international still wants a loan move after his request to join Napoli in the summer was rejected.

Coach Ruben Amorim doesn’t want to lose any players as the squad isn’t yet deep enough. But Mainoo has only started once this season and wants to improve his chance of wearing the England shirt like Gallagher.
