Sad reason why Virgil van Dijk doesn’t have his surname on back of Liverpool shirt

One of the best defenders in football history, Virgil van Dijk recently won a trophy for Liverpool following their victory in the Carabao Cup.

With five players under the age of twenty-one on the pitch at the conclusion of play, Liverpool’s historic 1-0 victory was sealed by the Dutchman’s header in the 118th minute.

At the start of the season, the 31-year-old was named Liverpool’s permanent captain, taking Jordan Henderson’s place as he headed for the Saudi Pro League.

Van Dijk celebrated his first trophy as the team captain by scoring a goal to fit the occasion.

The fact that the Liverpool number four doesn’t play with his surname on the back of his shirt has surely been noticed by supporters throughout the years. Instead, he just uses ‘Virgil’.

Van Dijk discarded his second name due of his father, according to Steven Fo Sieeuw, his mother’s side uncle.

In 2018, Fo Sieeuw stated to The Sun, “His dad separated from his mother and all three of his children, including Virgil.”

In actuality, his mother is the true hero of this tale—her father was absent during a number of crucial years.

“You don’t take your dad’s name off your shirt without a reason, and Virgil has made it very clear how he feels.”

In the meantime, Van Dijk discussed his seventh trophy as a Liverpool player in a post-match interview with Sky Sports on Sunday.

“Listen, we will never take things for granted, and you see today it could have been the other way as well, that we lost,” he began.

“But we did a job, even with all the problems we have had before the game. I’m so proud, proud to be part of this club and especially proud of the boys.

“All the young boys on the pitch, in extra time. It’s incredible, I’m so proud of the team.

“Intense game for both sides, they had chances and we had chances. Amazing. First trophy as Liverpool captain, it’s all for the fans, so let’s enjoy it.”
