The 4-1 loss at home to PSV Eindhoven in the Champions League came after a 3-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest and a 3-0 thrashing by Manchester City in the Premier League.

The Reds currently sit 12th in the league table with 18 points from 12 matches, trailing behind fierce rivals Everton and Manchester United. Slot’s difficult situation closely mirrors Klopp’s struggles during the 2020-21 season, which also followed a title-winning campaign with Liverpool.

Liverpool won the Premier League title by an 18-point lead in the 2019-20 season. Klopp’s squad had also achieved an impressive 68-match unbeaten streak at Anfield in league play. When asked if this period was one of his most challenging as a manager, Klopp remarked to Match of the Day at the time: “I would like to say no, but yes it is.”

He continued: “This team is an extreme team. We were extremely successful, and now we are facing an extreme situation as well, but we will fight through.”

Despite Liverpool seemingly at risk of failing to qualify for Europe, the Reds executed an incredible turnaround. After suffering a 1-0 loss at home to Fulham at Anfield, Klopp’s team went unbeaten for the rest of the season.

The German coach ultimately achieved one of his greatest successes during his time at Liverpool.

He led a stunning streak that enabled the Reds to secure eight wins and two draws in their last ten matches, astonishingly finishing in third place in 2020-21, thus ensuring Champions League qualification.

When questioned about whether he felt let down by his players’ performance, Slot responded: “No, not at all.

“While I do concur that our performance levels have not met the standards we expect and desire. However, last year when we performed exceptionally well, there was a focus on specific individuals, but I have always maintained that it is about the team as a whole.”

Like Klopp, Slot has committed to “keep fighting, regardless of the challenges.” The Reds and their manager have a chance on Sunday to significantly redeem their season when they visit the London Stadium to face West Ham in the Premier League.
