Former Liverpool star urges club to consider Gareth Southgate as next manager after Jurgen Klopp

After the season, former Liverpool defender Glen Johnson has urged Liverpool to think about replacing Jurgen Klopp with England manager Gareth Southgate.

After leading the Merseyside team for nine years, Klopp’s announcement of his departure cast the team under an unusual amount of uncertainty.

Xabi Alonso, a former player of Liverpool who is having a fantastic season with Bayer Leverkusen, has been strongly connected to the club, but new sources indicate that the Spaniard would prefer a move to Bayern Munich.

In light of this, former England and Liverpool right-back Glen Johnson has boldly suggested that his former team should try to sign Southgate.

“It’s an awkward one to talk about because you don’t want to go into a major tournament speculating about whether England’s manager is going elsewhere and you also don’t want to make assumptions,” Johnson said in an interview with Betfred.

“If he’s available in the summer, then you’ve got to look at all the options. He’s done a brilliant job with England, so there’s no reason why he can’t be successful with a club like Liverpool as he’d be dealing with a similar standard of players. You’d need to have the chat because you can’t just dismiss him if he’s available,” Johnson explained.

Given the previous record at international tournaments, it is undeniable that Southgate’s tenure as England manager has been a success, regardless of what others may think.

During his eight years as manager, the former Middlesbrough manager has led England to both the final of the Euros and a World Cup semi-final.

Johnson addressed the latest allegations as well, although he wasn’t persuaded that Southgate would perform well at Old Trafford.

“There have been a number of good, successful managers that have gone into the job at Manchester United and have struggled, so it wouldn’t be guaranteed success for Gareth if he was to take the job,” Johnson explained.
