Liverpool star blasted online after horror show against Crystal Palace
Liverpool aimed to bounce back quickly after the disappointing 3-0 loss to Atalanta, with Jurgen Klopp’s team keen to put that setback behind them. The unexpected defeat in the Europa League quarter-final first leg saw former West Ham striker Gianluca Scamacca make a mark.
For the match against Crystal Palace on Sunday, changes were implemented, notably with the return of first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker.
The Reds experienced a setback as they fell behind 1-0 when Eberechi Eze capitalized on space inside the area.
Shortly after, Jean-Philippe Mateta nearly doubled Palace’s lead, taking advantage of Virgil van Dijk’s slip reminiscent of Steven Gerrard’s infamous moment. Mateta ran through one-on-one with Alisson, but Andy Robertson came to the rescue with a superb goal-line clearance.
Van Dijk’s positioning was questioned for Eze’s opener, and he faced criticism online for his first-half performance.

One wrote: “Van Dijk bottling it in a title race. Imagine my shock.
A second said: “Virgil Van Dijk is by far the worst player to ever receive GOAT shouts in their position. So many hideous moments like that are overlooked by Liverpool fans and the media.”
Another fan added: “Just look at Van Dijk and Konate’s positioning for the Crystal Palace goal, Liverpool fans really tried to tell us these are the best defenders in the world.”
A fourth stated: “People really compared this Van Dijk to the likes of Terry and Vidic.”
A fifth joked: “Van Dijk can’t aura defend anymore lol.”
Liverpool has faced the challenge of trailing 1-0 in a remarkable 21 matches this season, yet they have shown resilience in their ability to come back.
However, failing to overturn the deficit in the second half would mark a concerning trend, leaving them without a victory for three consecutive games. From being at the top of the league, they could potentially slip to third place by the end of the weekend’s fixtures.
