PGMOL to ‘explore’ making huge change to VAR that fans have been crying out for

The PGMOL are exploring a major change to how VAR would work.

The PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited) is reportedly considering implementing what could be the most substantial alteration to VAR (Video Assistant Referee) since its introduction to the Premier League.

Introduced to the top flight of English football in the 2019/20 season, VAR has garnered mixed reviews from fans, players, and managers alike.

Over the years, various adjustments have been made to the technology and the procedures governing its use. These modifications include allowing referees greater flexibility to consult pitchside monitors and the integration of revised offside regulations.

One major criticism from fans, especially those attending matches in person, is the inability to hear the discussions among match officials as they review decisions using VAR.

However, the PGMOL is reportedly considering the implementation of a new system that would allow official communications to be heard by fans during matches, providing insight into the reasoning behind each decision.

PGMOL chief Howard Webb is set to make this announcement on the ‘Match Officials Mic’d Up’ show, which will feature VAR audio from three controversial decisions made during Everton’s recent victory over Nottingham Forest.

Ahead of the show, reporter Rob Dorsett explained to Sky Sports that while it’s a complex issue as IFAB (International Football Association Board) has never permitted live audio between match officials to be broadcast to the crowd, PGMOL is keen on making it happen.

Howard Webb believes that within the existing rules, referees, when called to review a decision on the screen, could potentially explain to the crowd why they are changing a decision.

If this proposal comes to fruition, it could mark the first time that match officials and referees directly communicate with spectators inside the stadium to clarify their decisions, potentially being implemented by next season.
