VAR could be scrapped in the Premier League from next season after one top-flight club makes official demand

A resolution has now been formally submitted to the Premier League by a named club.

According to a recent report, Premier League clubs are set to vote on a proposal to eliminate the video assistant referee (VAR) system starting from next season. The current campaign has been marked by numerous controversial decisions, sparking discussions about the future of VAR in English football and beyond.

A resolution has been formally submitted to the Premier League by Wolverhampton Wanderers, advocating for the removal of VAR this summer. This move reflects the growing discontent among clubs and fans regarding the implementation and impact of VAR on the game.

As per a report from The Athletic, Wolves’ initiative is expected to prompt a vote during the annual gathering of representatives from the 20 Premier League clubs scheduled for June 6.

In a statement, Wolverhampton Wanderers affirmed that their decision to push for the removal of VAR was made “after careful consideration and with the utmost respect for the Premier League, PGMOL (Professional Game Match Officials Limited), and our fellow competitors.” This indicates a thoughtful and respectful approach from Wolves towards all stakeholders involved in the decision-making process.

They added: “There is no blame to be placed – we are all just looking for the best possible outcome for football – and all stakeholders have been working hard to try and make the introduction of additional technology a success.

“However, after five seasons of VAR in the Premier League, it is time for a constructive and critical debate on its future.

“Our position is that the price we are paying for a small increase in accuracy is at odds with the spirit of our game, and as a result we should remove it from the 2024/25 season onwards.”
