Manchester United’s summer transfer strategy is heavily influenced by Dutch connections, with notable additions to the coaching staff and potential player signings. Ruud van Nistelrooy and Rene Hake are expected to join the coaching team, while Erik ten Hag is targeting Matthijs de Ligt from Bayern Munich and Joshua Zirkzee from Bologna for the first-team squad.

If these transfers materialize, United will have nine Dutch-origin players or those with Eredivisie experience, including Donny van de Beek. This trend highlights Ten Hag’s significant influence on the club’s transfer strategy.

Sir Jim Ratcliffe, aiming to establish a robust organizational structure at United, has brought in Dan Ashworth as the sporting director, with Jason Wilcox as the technical director and Christopher Vivell in a narrower recruitment role. This new structure is intended to reduce the manager’s influence on transfers, a shift from the previous regime where Ten Hag had a major say.

Ashworth, known for his successful recruitment strategies at Brighton, emphasizes a collaborative approach. In a 2020 interview, he highlighted the importance of aligning transfer decisions with the coach’s preferences to avoid wasted resources. He will apply this philosophy at United, ensuring that Ten Hag’s input is considered while also relying on his own instincts and contacts.

This summer, Ten Hag prioritizes a central defender and a striker, with De Ligt as a key target due to his past relationship with the manager. Ashworth’s experience and connections will be crucial in identifying and securing the right players to strengthen United’s squad.
