Man Utd made same mistake with Andre Onana as Antony as embarrassing email blunder revealed

Similar to their mistake with Antony, Manchester United made a grave error with their summer signing of Andre Onana.

In July, Onana left Inter Milan for Old Trafford in a £43.8 million transfer.

David de Gea, a United legend during his 12-year Premier League tenure, was replaced by the 27-year-old.

Onana’s transition to life in England has not been easy. He appeared uneasy playing out of the back and committed multiple errors as United was eliminated from the Champions League in the group stages.

Despite Inter’s eventual 1-0 loss to Manchester City, Onana had a key role in getting the team to the Champions League final the previous season.

It hasn’t gone as planned yet, but many anticipated that he would change the way United played under Erik ten Hag.

Bryan King, a former senior scout for Tottenham, Aston Villa, and Everton, claims that the Red Devils should have utilised the money they spent on Onana elsewhere, as Inter only anticipated a meagre offer.

He told the Inside Track podcast: “Ten Hag hasn’t given me any confidence that Man United are a side that can win the Premier League.

“That must come from the people he’s brought in. A friend of mine knows the sporting director at Inter Milan and they were prepared to let Onana go for about £6million.

“Then, all of a sudden, an email comes in offering over £50million for him.

Of course, they’re not going to ask them to readjust their bid.”

The Athletic reports that when Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was manager, United scouts assessed Antony’s worth at £25 million.

Ten Hag informed the club’s management that he wanted an additional attacker when he came in 2022, and the decision to sign Antony was taken.

In the end, United ended negotiations with Ajax and made it known in secret that they would not be spending more than £60 million.

Later in the window, they succumbed and ended up paying £86 million for the 23-year-old. This indicates that he is United’s second-most costly acquisition.

Antony is yet to score or register an assist this season and has lost his place to Alejandro Garnacho.

Before Sunday’s 2-2 match with Tottenham Hotspur, Ten Hag attacked Antony, saying his form has decreased because of off-field problems.

Three women have accused the Brazil international of domestic abuse, prompting a police probe.

Antony refutes all of the claims and has not been charged or placed under custody.

Ten Hag stated to the media, “I believe his off-field problems prevent him from playing. He needs to deal with the fact that they have undoubtedly had an effect on him.

He must resolve them as he is the one who caused them. Although we would support him to the fullest, he must do better.”
