Erik ten Hag has finally found his perfect Luke Shaw alternative as Man Utd solve problem position

Despite his involvement with England in the Euros, Luke Shaw has yet to feature for Manchester United this season due to persistent injury problems. His last appearance was in February against Luton Town, and he has been struggling to return to full fitness since then.

With Shaw still out, manager Erik ten Hag opted for 20-year-old Toby Collyer in United’s 7-0 Carabao Cup win over Barnsley. This was Collyer’s first start at Old Trafford and came shortly after his Premier League debut. Playing as a left-back, a position he is not accustomed to, Collyer performed admirably, securing a clean sheet and aiding United’s progress in the cup.

Collyer joined Manchester United in March 2022 after leaving Brighton and Hove Albion, where he had been since he was 12. He signed a three-year deal with United, extending his stay at the club until the summer of 2025 after failing to reach a new agreement with Brighton. In his first season, he made a notable impact with the under-21 team in both Premier League 2 and the EFL Trophy.

Prior to the 2023/24 season, Collyer was included in United’s first-team squad for their pre-season opener against Leeds United on July 12, 2023. Although he did not feature in that match, he made his senior debut two weeks later in a 3-1 loss to Wrexham, starting in that game.

This season, he has made three appearances, with his first coming as a substitute in the FA Community Shield against Manchester City.
