Liverpool player who ‘wanted to quit’ when Arne Slot arrived given unexpected first-team chance

Liverpool goalkeeper Caoimhin Kelleher, who recently expressed a desire to leave the club in search of regular playing time, may unexpectedly be handed his first start of the season against Bournemouth on Saturday. This follows news from manager Arne Slot that first-choice goalkeeper Alisson Becker is a doubt for the match due to a muscle issue.
Slot, who took over from Jurgen Klopp in June, has had a strong start, winning four out of five games. Despite this success, Kelleher had voiced his frustration over limited opportunities, particularly after Liverpool signed Georgian goalkeeper Giorgi Mamardashvili from Valencia, further limiting his chances for regular action.
During a press conference while on international duty with the Republic of Ireland, Kelleher stated his ambition to become a first-choice goalkeeper elsewhere. He revealed that Liverpool had rejected bids for him and added, “It’s not always in my hands to fully make the decision.”
Slot, when asked about Kelleher’s comments, downplayed any concerns, saying, “I would be worried if a player came out and said he loved it on the bench and wants to stay there for the rest of his life!” Despite Kelleher’s ambitions to leave, he now has the chance to impress, with Alisson’s injury potentially opening the door for his start against Bournemouth.
Kelleher, who has made 47 appearances for Liverpool, has been a vital part of their domestic cup successes and could play an important role this weekend.
