Before I came back at Old Trafford, I showed the board and the coach four Man Utd players who are the future of this club. They are world class star and we must not sell them. They end up selling the three of them”-Wayne Rooney told Man United to build the team around four players in 2022 but only one remains at the club

**Wayne Rooney’s 2022 Manchester United Rebuild Plan Sees Only Marcus Rashford Remain**

In 2022, Wayne Rooney called for a Manchester United rebuild centered around four core players. Two years later, just one remains at the club.

At the time, United was struggling under interim boss Ralf Rangnick, after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s departure. Speaking on Sky Sports’ *Monday Night Football*, Rooney named four players he felt should be pivotal to United’s future success.

Rooney stated: “I believe [Jadon] Sancho will improve next season, and Marcus [Rashford] will too. They have talented young players. I think Jesse Lingard deserves to play as he brings energy and quality. Scott McTominay has also done well.”

He added: “There are good young players, but they need confidence and belief to perform at their best. Of course, the new manager will likely bring in his own signings to build the squad.”

Now, two years later, only Marcus Rashford remains at Manchester United. However, Rashford faced a tough 2023/24 season and continues to struggle with form in the current campaign.

The others have since departed: Scott McTominay transferred to Napoli, Jadon Sancho was loaned to Chelsea following issues with manager Erik ten Hag, and Jesse Lingard, after leaving in 2023 for Nottingham Forest, now plays for FC Seoul in South Korea’s K League.

As for United, they have endured a poor start to the 2024/25 season, sitting 14th in the Premier League after defeats to Brighton and Liverpool ahead of the international break.
