James Garner, the English midfielder now at Everton, recently spoke about his exit from Manchester United and the honest conversation he had with Erik ten Hag, the club’s manager.

Garner, who spent over ten years at Manchester United, left in 2022 following a £15 million transfer to Everton. He had made seven appearances for United, a club he had supported since childhood.

His decision to leave stemmed from a frank discussion with Ten Hag, who had just taken over as manager that summer. In a 2023 interview, Garner shared how this conversation was key in his choice to seek new opportunities.

Describing Ten Hag as kind yet firm, with a strong emphasis on discipline, Garner recalled that the talk didn’t unfold as he had hoped. “Ten Hag is a good man but very strict,” Garner said. “He has a firm stance on discipline and doesn’t hesitate to hold people accountable.”

During their conversation, Garner asked Ten Hag directly about his future role at United, wanting clarity on whether he would be part of the manager’s plans or get regular playing time.

The response, however, was not what Garner had anticipated. “I had a straightforward conversation with him, asking if he saw me as part of his plans or if I would get game time,” Garner explained. “When things didn’t go the way I’d hoped, I knew it was time to move on.”

This decision came after a successful loan spell at Nottingham Forest during the 2021-22 season, where he played a key role in their promotion to the Premier League. His performances drew attention from various clubs, making it an ideal time for a permanent move.

Despite his attachment to Manchester United, Garner recognized that Everton offered more playing time and a clearer path for development, leading him to join the Merseyside club.

Garner’s decision was driven by his need for more consistent opportunities, which he felt uncertain about under Ten Hag.

Since moving to Everton, Garner has become a valuable asset, continuing to grow and perform in the Premier League. Reflecting on his departure from United, he acknowledged that while the conversation with Ten Hag was crucial, his move to Everton has opened an exciting new chapter in his career.

Though disappointed not to be part of Ten Hag’s plans, Garner remains positive, focusing on his development and contributing to Everton’s success.
