Arsenal fans say the same thing about Mikel Merino after just 30 minutes

Arsenal supporters shared their thoughts on new recruit Mikel Merino following his debut during the 2-0 victory against Paris Saint-Germain.

Merino transferred to Arsenal from Real Sociedad on August 27 for a fee reported to reach £31.6 million, including add-ons. However, before making his first appearance, he sustained an unusual injury in training when teammate Gabriel accidentally fell on him, injuring his shoulder.

Finally, over a month after his signing, Merino debuted in the Champions League match against PSG, entering in the 64th minute to take over from Thomas Partey alongside Declan Rice. Despite the anticipation, fans were underwhelmed by his performance, noting his difficulties.

On social media platform X, one fan commented, “Honestly, Merino seems to be the weakest link in that midfield.” Another echoed this sentiment, stating, “With Partey off, Merino and Rice at six, Arsenal completely lost control of the game.” A joking fan added, “Yeah Merino lol, Sociedad sold us a lemon.”

Conversely, some fans defended him, criticizing others for their early judgments, with one remarking, “Seeing people on Twitter say Merino is a waste of money… Less than 10 minutes into his debut and he hasn’t played in a month.”

When fully fit, Merino is anticipated to play a significant role for Arsenal throughout the season, having previously made 242 appearances for Real Sociedad. Upon announcing the signing, Arteta stated, “Mikel is a player who will bring us immense quality through his experience and versatility. He has competed at the highest levels both at club and international stages for several seasons. Mikel will enhance our squad significantly with his technical skills and his strong, positive character.”
