Man Utd want to sign LaLiga sensation
Reporter Florian Plettenberg of Sky Germany claims that in order to find out how much it may cost to recruit Ronald Araujo in 2024, United has reportedly contacted Barcelona about the possibility of doing so.
A summer transfer is more plausible given the report’s estimate that any deal this month will likely cost about €80 million (£69 million), and the player himself seems eager to remain at Camp Nou past the current window.
The 24-year-old is reportedly considered a “top target” by German powerhouse Bayern Munich, so Ten Hag will have competition if he wants to land his man at the conclusion of the season.
Ronaldo Araujo and Harry Maguire’s similarities
It was Maguire who had established himself as the key member of Ten Hag’s defence before suffering a devastating injury blow last month. His excellent comeback even earned him the Premier League Player of the Month title for November.
Previously hinted, the 30-year-old defender was reportedly available during the summer due to losing the captaincy, with his perceived “sluggish pace” concerning the United boss. Acquiring Araujo might signal the end for Maguire at Manchester United, as the Barca boss Xavi Hernandez considers the 6-foot-2 titan “one of the best in the world” in his position.
The 16-cap international, praised as a “Rolls-Royce” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, excels in playing out from the back. Notably, he ranks in the top 7% for successful take-ons per 90 and in the top 13% for progressive passes per 90 among European peers. In contrast, Maguire falls in the top 60% and top 21% for the same metrics over the last 365 days, showcasing a less impressive ability to carry the ball forward from deep.
The contrast in quality extends to Araujo’s defensive capabilities, winning 64% of total duels and 58% of ground duels in LaLiga this season. In comparison, the former United skipper has won 60% of total duels and only 43% of ground duels. Described as emitting “prime [Virgil] Van Dijk vibes” by Kulig, Araujo could be a transformative signing for Old Trafford, presenting a more youthful, long-term solution in an aging department.
