Barca: just arrived, Wojciech Szczesny lets loose on his future
FC Barcelona had a strong start to the season, but injuries were always looming. This is what eventually led to Wojciech Szczesny being considered. After Marc-Andre ter Stegen’s injury, the Blaugrana club opted for him to replace the German.
At the beginning of the season, Barca lost Marc-Andre ter Stegen to injury for the rest of the 2024-25 season. Currently, Inaki Pena is filling in as the temporary goalkeeper. However, he hasn’t been very convincing so far. As a result, the club quickly sought out a free agent goalkeeper for reinforcement. The club’s leadership turned to Wojciech Szczesny, the 34-year-old Pole who had just announced his retirement. Although Keylor Navas had been rumored, it’s Robert Lewandowski’s compatriot who will be joining the Catalan club.
Szczesny signed a one-year contract, giving Ter Stegen time to recover. Nevertheless, it’s not guaranteed yet that Szczesny will be the undisputed starter. He made it clear before his arrival that he wants to be the number 1 goalkeeper, but he will need to prove it on the field. If he performs exceptionally well this season, an extension could be considered. Szczesny was even asked about the possibility of staying at FC Barcelona for longer than one year and responded candidly to Mundo Deportivo.
Wojciech Szczesny’s thoughts on a potential extension
In a detailed interview with Mundo Deportivo, Wojciech Szczesny discussed several topics. One of them was the possibility of him playing an additional season or more with Barca beyond his current contract. It’s important to note that he only signed a one-year deal upon joining. Szczesny admitted that if the opportunity arises, he would consider it. He didn’t definitively say whether he would accept or decline, but he emphasized that it would be an honor for him.
